A couple of weeks ago; I went with an old friend to the Detroit Zoo for our first visit of 2015. We usually try to get there when it opens in the morning and leave well before noon,as the light gets quite harsh by about ten o'clock. I always take the same lens, which is an older Nikon 70-300 telephoto zoom that lacks anti-vibration.Since the sensor in my Nikon body is APS it allows the long end of my lens to multiply by 1.5, turning it into a 450 mm. This is perfect for roaming the zoo, whether I'm shooting animals or in the beautiful gardens shooting flowers. However; with the lack of anti-vibration I have to improvise but using a tri-pod can be dangerous and intrusive when you're in crowded areas. My trick is to rest my camera bag on a fence post, trash container or whatever solid but safe means that I can find. I always carry a couple of small bean bags with me to support the lens and it works great. I only take a small Tamrac bag with me, containing just what I need for the morning, as anything more is simply dead weight. I am not a lens changer.I decide what I need for the day and that is all I take.
The pictures that I am posting in my blog today were all taken in my recent, two hour stroll around the zoo, which happens to be one of my favorite places. I hope you enjoy them and will leave a brief comment at the bottom of the page. Thanks for looking in.
