In the summer of 1979, my wife, my two daughters and I set out for the province of Alberta in western Canada. We left the Detroit area in a large Chevrolet van and were pulling an also large, canvas, pop-up trailer that we had loaded with everything we felt was necessary for the trip. We headed north and crossed into Canada at International Falls, Minnesota, where we picked up the Trans Canada highway and followed it all the way to Calgary. From Calgary it is just a short hop northwest to Banff and Jasper national parks, which were our destinations. We enjoyed camping in remote areas so we were often alone but took every precaution to protect ourselves. The mountain scenery, to a photographer like myself, was paradise and in the outback we had it all to ourselves. Most places we ventured to we saw very few people, if any, but a considerable amount of wildlife. However; I did not take any animal pictures as I had taken a large and heavy Mamiya RB-67 camera, strictly for shooting the landscape. The images that I am pinning to my post were all shot on medium format, Kodak color negative film and developed by me in a Unicolor drum. The original prints were made on Agfacolor paper that was real paper and not resin coated as we have today.. The paper could be tray developed and had a look that would be difficult to replicate. The paper died, as did many other significant items in photographic history.
My father spent several years in western Canada, as he was stationed on the Pacific coast in the forties and vacationed in Alberta in later times. He would look at my pictures and say," I never saw any of those things in my travels through the Rockies." And I would tease him by saying that he had to get out of the Holiday Inn and off of the main highways to find the material. He was a photographer, too. I have also included two autumn images fo northern Michigan that were taken in the same year. I hope you find my images interesting and will leave a comment at the bottom of the post or e-mail me at studio90@wowway.com Thanks again, for looking in.
