CARS IN DETROIT

It has only been a week since over a million people crowded the curbs of Woodward Avenue in Detroit to view another spectacular " Detroit Dream Cruise." I try to go each year, and never without a camera, as I have a great affection for the automobile. The cars of yesteryear had an individuality and romance that is the big memory draw for so many; whereas; the automobiles of today seem to all look the same and lack the character of bygone models. I am amazed, as well, by what is considered a vintage automobile but I guess an individual's age has much to do with it. I tend to look at vehicles of the forties and beyond but many on the street consider a Mustang an old set of wheels. I began working at Ford Motor Company when the Mustang was just about to be unveiled and in the beginning it was destined to be competion for the small foreign makes that were entering the country. It certainly made a niche for itself and is approaching it's fiftieth birthday.
Photographing automobiles can be difficult, especially on a sunny day and when fighting the crowd to get your shot. The best way to overcome the reflections in the vehicle paint is to use a polarizing filter on your lens or possibly wait for an overcast period. With regard to the crowd; I like to arrive at a car show before it opens and leave before the throngs take over ----- which is usually when the sun is about to cause problems. I am not a summer person but car shows keep me happy and give me material to work on the rest of the year.
