Autumn in Black and White

For the past five years I have gone to the Appalachian region of North Carolina
in mid October, drawn by the spectacular color and the great weather. The Blue Ridge mountains
are ablaze for about the last two weeks of the month and the Parkway is crowded with
vacationers and tour buses every day. It's amazing to watch the people walk along the roads with
their cameras, I-pads and cell phones trying to capture the vistas that are 360 degrees of bright
red and yellow.
I like to travel the Blue Ridge Parkway when the weather is not conducive for anyone
other than a die-hard photographer or an all-season hiker. Some of the best images are shot when there is no sun because fog, rain and gray skies can create superb atmosphere and also
tends to keep the tourists or " Leafers, " as they are called by the locals, back in town. When
the weather is inclement I like to shoot in black and white to capture the mood of my
surroundings as, usually, there is very little color present anyway. With digital however; you
must shoot in color and transpose the image to monochrome in processing. If you shoot to
capture in raw with a JPG image at the same time, you can have your cake and eat it too. By
setting the JPG image to black and white; the raw file will automatically process in color.
You have one image to assess and one to work with.
I have included, this month, a few of my autumn, black and white prints of various sizes.
I hope you enjoy them and will leave a comment on my blog --- pro or con. Until I sit at the key
board again next month ----- thank you.
